Intro
Lantmännen Biorefineries is one of northern Europe’s largest biorefineries and plays an important role in the transition to a more circular food and energy system. With production ranging from ethanol to protein ingredients, the operation is both complex and highly specialised. Since 2020, Elvenite has been a close partner in one of Lantmännen's most extensive digital transformation journeys.
Case
When the project started in 2020, Lantmännen Biorefineries consisted of four separate companies with different business systems: IFS, Visma.net and an older version of Infor M3. This created unnecessary process variations, difficulties in tracking data and a fragmented system management.
The strategy was clear: consolidate all companies into a single Lantmännen Biorefineries AB, with a unified platform in Infor M3, and in the next step migrate to the cloud. The goal was a future-proof and scalable solution - capable of handling high complexity, automation and data-driven development.
We knew that the journey would be both technically demanding and business-critical. It required a partner who understood our operations deeply and could manage the entire chain, from implementation to management.
This was not just a technical project. It was about getting the business system to work in practice - in factories, production lines, and everyday routines. We built several customised solutions that complement M3 and support mission-critical processes in production, logistics, and quality.
Once all companies were merged into a unified Biorefineries AB and the business processes were harmonised, the next step was taken: to move the entire M3 solution to the cloud. With Infor CloudSuite in place, the system is now easier to scale, maintain, and further develop.
The five-year collaboration with several sub-projects was delivered as planned - both on time and within budget. And the work does not stop there. Today, we at Elvenite are also responsible for the management of the entire platform. Our Managed Services team handles operations, support and further development - making us a natural part of Lantmännen Biorefineries' digital landscape.
A strong driving force in the project was the need to collect data in one place to ensure consistent and reliable information across all processes. By creating a centralized platform, duplicated work was reduced, and decision-making could be based on accurate and up-to-date information.
To manage these complex requirements, Scandbio early on used a project portfolio visualisation tool that helped the management team to prioritise and reallocate resources. Some projects could be postponed to focus on critical tasks, optimising both time and budget.
Managing multiple systems simultaneously required proper planning and coordination among all stakeholders, along with a carefully planned cutover phase, which was crucial for a smooth transition from Dynamics AX to Infor M3 CloudSuite.
We’ve taken a huge leap forward. Moving from four separate systems to one unified cloud platform has opened up entirely new possibilities to work smarter, more consistently, and more data-driven. Elvenite has been a reliable partner throughout the journey - and we look forward to continuing to evolve together.
With the new cloud platform, Lantmännen Biorefineries now has a solid foundation to further develop its working methods. The focus going forward is on using data and AI to improve decision support, automate more processes, and drive efficiency throughout the organisation.
An important part of why the project landed so well has been how we chose to collaborate. From the start we built a joint working model with clear lines of communication, close collaboration between our teams, and a shared responsibility for both the whole and the details. Decisions have been made in line with the project's needs – quickly, well-founded, and with the organisation's goals in focus.
This working method has made it possible to manage a complex change process without losing momentum or direction. We have been able to navigate through technological shifts, coordinate operations, and at the same time ensure that the solution actually works in practice.
With the system platform now in place, we move on to the next phase – where we continue to work closely together, with a focus on further developing processes, leveraging available data, and exploring the possibilities of automation and AI.
